Speaking on behalf of my local club, (Gosford) they would be happy to host a regatta (States or Nationals or other). They have a regatta we could attach ourselves too (planned for March 2015 this year although I will be away that weekend!) but they host other regattas as stand alone events as well. I’m not saying we have to choose them, but I’m sure they would be willing and able. Other venues will be excellent too, I’m sure.
Barring family commitments I’m happy and keen to travel for a regatta – I have pencilled Jervis Bay and Canberra into the diary for this year.

::Can I also add to the list the Heaven Can Wait regatta sailed out of Toronto Sailing Club on Lake Macquarie. I have never done it but have always wanted to. Initially for yachts only, it was a 24hr distance race doing laps around Lake Macquarie to raise money fopr charity. It has since been expanded to include a 12hr race and also a “one lap dash” for small boats and dinghies. The ‘lap’ itself can vary according to the conditions on the day, I believe.
Anyway, info is here:

I’m not necessarily saying this should be part of a travellers trophy etc, just a fun event.

::Sounds good Glenn
If there are some set regattas we could even set up a travellers trophy to reward the dedicated travellers amongst us.
Probably something for an association to sort out
I’ll try to find out the dates for the Gosford Regatta (called the Len Walpole Memorial Regatta)

::Hi Leigh
Thanks for taking the time to post this.
I should just make a correction and comment.
It was my brother, Will King, who won in Jervis Bay, not me. He borrowed Dad (David King)’s boat for J.Bay. I had a mixed feeling of pride and annoyance as I saw my brother sail away from me in 2 of the 3 races in J.Bay on his first proper outing on a Weta. In Canberra he was, in fact, sailing his Hobie 16 with his mate, Chris Wild.
I really quite enjoyed the weekend in Canberra, I realise the weather wasn’t to everyone’s liking, but I was able to do one race with each of my older kids (age 6 and 8). They would not have survived the ordeal of J.Bay!! They also were able to do a race with their Grand-dad, so that was fun and we could drop them off to the shore crew when they had had enough. They both really enjoyed it and I want to try to encourage them a bit more as they get older.
I really enjoyed the close quarters of the fleet racing in Canberra too – we seemed a lot more spread out in J.Bay, although with stronger winds that is to be expected, I guess.
Thanks to the organisers and volunteers, too. Without them, these events couldn’t happen.

31 August 2014 at 10:34 am in reply to: Toukley Sailing Club Brass Monkey Regatta June long weekend #469::Yep, that was David (Dad). It was one of his first outings on his boat and he had the angle of the mainsheet cleat such that it was difficult to uncleat. Sure enough he got hit by a bullet and over he went. It seemed to be in super slow motion as I sailed past him. Anyway he got it back up again and continued the race.
Good video Geoff, it’s funny how the camera always seems to halve the apparent wind strength and wave size. It was actually pretty darn windy at times!
::Hi Leigh
I have sailed out of YMCASC many moons ago as a kid in a Mirror Dinghy. Mostly we sailed from the CYC, but occasionally there would be a regatta at YMCA. But we are talking about last century!
Re Gosford launching and retrieving – I guess it’s just what you are used to. But in my experience its better than most places in Sydney. There is adequate parking on flat ground and a big grassy space to rig up on (for example 100+ Lasers have had their State titles previously at Gosford. 30+ lasers most Saturdays plus other classes). The grass leads down to a sandy beach which is about 10? metres long – there can be a delay of a few minutes if everyone decides to launch at the same time, although the plus side is that there are usually some friendly people ready to drag your dolly up onto the grass for you! You can jump on board with your centreboard half down and within another 5-10m you are in deep water
Anyway, looking forward to the season ahead
Cheers, Alistair
::Hi all
I am committed to the Canberra weekend – have already booked accomm. I’ll be sailing by myself or with one of my kids, depending on conditions. My father will also be coming with his Weta, so that makes 2 from Gosford Sailing Club. Looking forward to it.
Regarding the other regattas, I can’t commit yet. However the dates you mentioned for Jervis Bay do not match those mentioned elsewhere. Others think that Jervis Bay is on the long weekend. Some have decided to opt out of Jervis Bay because of long weekend commitment s and long weekend traffic. I have not been able to find any info about Jervis Bay on the Web.
Are you sure about the Jervis Bay dates?
Cheers
Alistair
::Hi everyone
The Entry form and NOR are now available – see the home page
http://www.toukleysailingclub.com/index.html
Looks like
2 heats Sat afternoon
1 heat Sunday morning, 2 Sunday afternoon
1-2 heats Monday morning
I haven’t sailed out of Toukley before but I know the area a little – looks pleasant enough, with grassy area right down to waters edge. I have sailed in that body of water previously, but from Long Jetty sailing club (which I am not sure exists any more). Toukley is easy to access from the M1(F3) heading north. It is not as far north as Lake Macquarie.
I don’t know if I could dedicate an entire long weekend away from my family, but depending on how others feel we could maybe have a regatta within a regatta? Perhaps Do Sunday only? (Given that it is 3 races that day). Just throwing some ideas out there…
Best wishes
Alistair
